Siding Services in Crofton, Maryland

Don’t do these things when you’re maintaining your vinyl siding.

Vinyl siding is a useful addition to anyone’s home, but you have to take good care of it to get your siding to last. Some people try to handle vinyl siding maintenance on their own, and it can sometimes result in a few problems popping up. There are some wrong ways to take care of your siding, and we want to clarify what to avoid doing when performing maintenance. Don’t do these things when you’re maintaining your vinyl siding.

Don’t Paint Your Vinyl Siding

Painting your vinyl siding is a bad idea. It can harm your home’s overall aesthetic. Your siding will expand and contract as temperatures change outside. This causes the seams made because of panel overlap to alter positions during the different seasons, resulting in crackling for your exterior. Painting during warm weather may look fine at first, but problems will be revealed later when the weather cools. On top of that, you could damage vinyl siding if you apply paint to it.

Don’t Use Harsh Chemicals on Your Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding takes constant exposure from the elements, meaning you’ll have to clean it from time to time. However, avoid using anything too strong. Chemicals that are too strong will cause damage to the surface of your siding. If you’re unsure of whether or not the solution is too powerful, test it out on a small part of your house’s exterior. You can monitor if you see anything get damaged, and if you don’t, the cleaner should be ok to use.

Don’t Use Any Abrasive Cleaning Materials

If you use items that are too abrasive, you’ll permanently scratch your vinyl siding. Such items include wire brushes and steel wool. You can also cause other problems such as discoloration and puncture wounds. You may have to be a little more patient when you’re cleaning, but going with something like a soft cloth will prove more advantageous to you. It will take a greater amount time to clean your siding, but you won’t run the risk of causing any damage.

Keep BBQs Far Enough Away

If you’re going to use a BBQ grill, it needs to be no fewer than 10 feet away. Otherwise, your home’s exterior could be greatly compromised. PVC may not ignite until it reaches temperatures of around 730 degrees Fahrenheit, but fires from BBQ grills can get to temperatures that are close to that, around 600 degrees Fahrenheit. This is enough to cause significant damage to your siding if your grill is too close.
