How to Prepare Your Roof for Fall

How to Prepare Your Roof for Fall

Here is what you can do to get your roof ready for the fall.

During summer, many people may overlook all of the maintenance procedures needed to keep their roofs in good shape. It’s a common oversight, having house projects pushed to the back of the mind while summer vacations take over. But your roof does need a lot of TLC, and if you haven’t gotten ready for the fall season yet, now is the time to do it. You want to take advantage of the pleasant weather we have before the days get both colder and shorter. Here is what you can do to get your roof ready for the fall.

Clean Debris From Your Roof

Since your roof is one the outside of your house, it gets exposed to all of the weather conditions your home faces. Over time, you’ll start to accumulate a lot of debris, and it’s up to you to keep that debris under control, so it doesn’t overwhelm your roofing. Debris that gets left there for the season will bring in a great deal of moisture, which can cause your house to become moldy.

Clean Your Gutters

Leaves will often get caught in your gutters during fall. Your guttering is the most necessary component of your roof for draining excess water so that it doesn’t flood your property. Without clean gutters, you open your roof up to mold, rot, and leakage. Your gutters might also start bending because of the weight that all of your leaves can have on them. It’s worth the time and labor to keep your gutters free of debris at all times to avoid bigger problems down the road.

Check Your Attic For Air Flow

You need proper air ventilation in your attic if you want your roof in pristine condition. Without good ventilation, your roof’s lifespan will go down significantly. If you see any old or damaged insulation, get it replaced immediately. Once the branches have come down, it’s in your best interest to keep them off of your roof. Branches can cause damage to your roof as well as your guttering.

Keep Overhanging Branches Away From Your Roof

If your home has a lot of surrounding trees, you’ll have to worry about the branches that fall from them. Summer storms are likely to blow some branches off of your trees, and autumnal winds can contribute as well. Some of these branches may start to fall on your roof and cause damage
